I think there are a couple main reasons why the research aspect is so overlooked in affiliate marketing. The first reason is, people are just lazy. Most new affiliate marketers are only thinking about making money in the shortest period of time, so they simply choose a niche and build a site in their first day. Then, months go by with little to no website traffic and they proclaim that affiliate marketing no longer works. Considering affiliate marketing is a multi-billion dollar per year industry driving about 20% of all online sales, that of course isn’t true. Most people just don’t do the research necessary to truly find a profitable niche that is in demand without too much competition.

Promote products at various price points. Even the little products (like Amazon ebooks) add up. If there is a truly useful product on the pricier side, it can still be worth the promotion even if only a few people buy it. If you’ve used a product of exceptional quality and it’s a good investment, or if it’s a product that’s unique, specialized or one-of-a-kind, go for it.
I totally agreed with you that affiliated marketing pay the bill more that AdSense does. I was reading a post on bivori that was shared by Reginald on how he made $405 in a month from affiliated marketing yet he made less than $5 from his AdSense account that same month, meaning that he ventured more into affiliated marketing the more rather than AdSense, but the fact is traffic is the real back-born of a successful affiliated internet marketers and choosing the right niche.

Mistake #3: Giving your friend’s product a glowing review without actually being familiar with your friend’s product. This happens a lot in the affiliate marketing (and book marketing) world unfortunately. It’s a “scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” type of situation. By all means, give your friend a glowing review, but if you haven’t actually read their book or taken their course or tried their product, don’t talk about it as though you have. Readers deserve honest recommendations! (Here’s an example of me helping to announce the launch of my friend’s book while being clear I hadn’t read it.)
You need to make sure that the product or service you’re affiliated with is something you really believe in. It’d be easy to just form a partnership on the basis of making an easy buck, but what does that say about your brand? Before you shake hands and sign contracts, ask yourself if this is a product or service you would want yourself. If not, just look for the next opportunity. Building relationships with a company that you would stand by as a customer will provide authenticity and integrity to your brand, and that builds invaluable loyalty.
