Organizing your Internet Business

It is time to start thinking about taxes, a time many small business owners are hyper-aware of.

Regardless of what business you are in, being organized is an asset.  It can be the difference between confidence and a panic attack.  Literally.

Keep records, just like you would with an offline business.  The better organized you are, the smoother tax time will be for you.

Manage Finanaces

You must be able to track where the money comes in and where it goes out.  Money is the lifeblood of your business.  Without it you cannot pay the ISP or even the electric bill.

For ease of accounting you should set up a system to keep track of your business finances.  Your accountant will love you if you can provide 2 stacks.  Money you received and money you spent.

Example Money In:

  • Clickbank reciepts.
  • Paypal reciepts.
  • Check deposits.

Example Money Out:

  • Credit Card Statements.
  • Webhosting receipts.
  • Supplies.
  • Shipping.
  • Etc.

Manage Tasks

Each day you should have a list of tasks.  Leave yourself plenty of time to complete each task, whether it is calling to schedule an appointment or sending an email to reciprocate in an email swap, each business has the everyday tasks that support the business.

As a business owner, you are also responsible for growing the business.  What product do you choose?  Who will you partner with?  These decisions affect your business as a whole.

Client files should be protected but easily accessible.

Manage Your Time

When it is your business, you may find it difficult at first to have anything resembling a real life, but persist and you can achieve balance.

  • Don’t Skip Meals or eat at the computer.  Your body needs down time to function at its best.
  • Schedule your calls in groups.  Knowing you have another call waiting can keep your call on track.
  • Use templates and auto-responders for correspondence.  Systemize where possible.
  • Schedule time off of work.  Exercise, be with friends, or just relax and enjoy life.

It doesn’t matter what type of business you have, as a business owner you are going to need to be able to call up information and that means organization.  Confirm a payment or submit an invoice, during tax time you want to be able to track every debt to its source.
